Are Switches the New Touch?
An interview with our product manager (switches and encoders)
Interviewer: Welcome! Digitalization has significantly changed the market for control elements. Many rely on touchscreens, but classic buttons and switches remain relevant. Are switches the new touch?
Product Manager: Thank you for having me! In fact, haptic control elements such as buttons and switches are experiencing a resurgence. Especially in industrial applications, the automotive sector, and embedded systems, many customers recognize the advantages over purely capacitive touch solutions.
Interviewer: What advantages do switches and encoders offer compared to touch controls?
Product Manager: A key advantage is haptic feedback. While touchscreens often require visual confirmation, mechanical buttons and switches provide immediate physical feedback. This improves usability and reduces operating errors, particularly in safety-critical environments.
Interviewer: Which technologies play a role in this?
Product Manager: Precision rotary encoders like the Rotary Encoder with Display, the Rotary Encoder with LCD Display, or the Rotary Encoder with Touch Display are in high demand. These not only offer precise control but also provide feedback via a digital display.
Interviewer: Are there hybrid solutions between touch and mechanical switches?
Product Manager: Yes, hybrid solutions are an exciting field. We see strong demand for products like the Rotary Encoder LCD Menu, a 20x4 LCD Menu with Rotary Encoder, or an Encoder with Visual Feedback. These combine the advantages of both technologies: A flexible, customizable display with the precise tactile control of a rotary encoder.
Interviewer: Are there specific applications where mechanical switches are particularly in demand?
Product Manager: In many industrial and medical applications, classic buttons/switches are indispensable. We are also seeing a strong return to tactile control elements in the automotive industry and HMI (Human Machine Interface) solutions.
Interviewer: What does the future look like? Will touchscreens be phased out in the long run?
Product Manager: Touchscreens will remain important in many areas, especially where flexible operation with changing content is required. But for precision, reliability, and user comfort, mechanical elements are regaining importance. The future lies in combining both technologies.
Interviewer: Thank you for the fascinating conversation!
Product Manager: My pleasure!
